Is Your AC Making Strange Noises? Here’s What Each Sound Means

Your air conditioner is designed to run quietly in the background, doing its job without drawing attention to itself. So when it starts making a sound you have never heard before, it is usually trying to tell you something. Some noises are minor and easy to fix. Others are a warning sign that something more serious is going on inside the system. Learning to identify what each sound means can help you act quickly, avoid bigger repairs, and keep your home cool when you need it most.

Banging or Clanking

A loud banging or clanking noise coming from your air conditioner almost always points to a loose or broken component inside the unit. This could be a loose connecting rod, a broken piston pin, or an unbalanced blower wheel striking the housing as it spins. In some cases, a small object, such as a stick or a stone, gets pulled into the outdoor unit and rattles around inside.

Do not ignore this one. Banging sounds tend to escalate quickly, and what starts as a loose part can become a damaged compressor if the system keeps running. Turn off the unit and call a technician to inspect it before you start it back up.

Squealing or Screeching

A high-pitched squealing sound typically comes from one of two places: the fan motor or the compressor. If the noise originates from the indoor air handler, the blower motor belt may be worn or slipping, which is common in older systems that use belt-driven motors. If the sound comes from the outdoor unit, the compressor may be building up too much internal pressure, which is a serious issue that requires immediate attention.

Some newer systems make a brief squealing sound at startup that fades within a few seconds. That is usually normal. A squeal that continues throughout the cooling cycle is not, and you should have a technician take a look before the motor or compressor gives out entirely.

Clicking

A single click when your AC turns on or shuts off is completely normal. That is just the relay switching. But if you hear repeated clicking while the system is running or while it is trying to start up, that points to a failing capacitor or a problem with the control board. Capacitors are the components that give motors their startup jolt of power, and when they begin to fail, the system may click repeatedly as it tries to engage and fails.

Fortunately, capacitors are one of the more affordable HVAC repairs. Catching this early can prevent a full motor burnout, which costs significantly more to fix.

Hissing

A hissing sound from your AC is most often a sign of a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant travels through a sealed loop under pressure, and when a crack or hole develops in the line, you may hear a faint hiss as the gas escapes. Other signs of a refrigerant leak include ice buildup on the coils, reduced cooling performance, and higher-than-normal energy bills.

Refrigerant handling requires a licensed technician. This is not a DIY repair, both because of the technical skill involved and because refrigerants are regulated substances. If you suspect a leak, shut down the system and have a professional assess and recharge the refrigerant, then seal the leak.

Bubbling or Gurgling

Bubbling or gurgling sounds often go hand in hand with a refrigerant leak. When refrigerant escapes from a line, air or moisture can enter the system, creating that liquid-moving sound as the refrigerant circulates. A gurgling sound can also indicate a blocked or partially clogged condensate drain line, where water is struggling to move through as designed.

If the gurgling is paired with water pooling around your indoor unit, the condensate drain is the more likely culprit. Flushing the drain line with a diluted bleach solution often resolves the clog, but if the noise and moisture persist, a technician should take a closer look.

Rattling

Rattling is one of the more common and less alarming noises your AC can make, though it still deserves attention. Loose screws on the access panels, debris in the outdoor unit, or a slightly unbalanced fan blade can all produce a rattling sound. Start by checking that all panels are secured tightly and clear any leaves or sticks that may have worked their way into the outdoor unit.

If the rattling persists after those basic checks, it may indicate a loose component within the system. Left unaddressed, vibrating parts can work themselves further loose and cause damage to surrounding components over time.

Humming

A low-level hum from a running AC is normal. A louder or more pronounced humming that was not there before is worth investigating. This type of noise often signals an electrical issue, such as a failing contactor, a motor struggling to start, or loose wiring causing vibration inside the unit.

A licensed technician should always handle electrical issues in HVAC systems. Do not attempt to open the electrical panel on your unit without proper training and the system fully powered down.

When to Call and When to Wait

Not every unfamiliar sound is an emergency, but none of them should be ignored for long. As a general rule, if the sound is new, persistent, or getting louder, it is time to call a technician. The cost of a diagnostic visit is almost always less than the cost of a repair that could have been caught earlier, and far less than a full system replacement that a neglected problem might eventually require.

Your AC is one of the hardest-working systems in your home. When it starts talking to you, it pays to listen.
